Did you know that a cushion which is derived from the Old French name coisson or coissin and from the Latin word culcita, and simply put is a soft type of bag made from some kind of ornamental material and then filled with something like wool hair, feathers, polyester, staple fibre, non-woven material or even paper torn into small pieces. The type of stuffing it contains will determine how comfortable they are and also the cost.

They are primarily used for sitting or kneeling on and also as a support for your back when sitting down. They can also be used to soften the hardness of some chairs and sofas. Cushions with the aid of a rug can be used for outdoor purposes to help soften hard ground to prevent the discomfort of wet grass and those nasty biting insects sometimes these can be known as throw pillows, they can also be used on outdoor furniture such as sun loungers and patio sets.

You may not realise it but the humble cushion is one of the most ancient pieces of furniture accessories, indeed trawling through recent studies done on the contents of all the old great houses and palaces through the Middle Ages, also ancient Greece and Rome make constant reference to them.

Cushions in those days were often of a much bigger size, usually covered with leather and quite firm so they could also act as a seat, but over a long period of time the tendency has been for cushions to be much smaller.

Cushions were, indeed, used as seats at all kinds of events in France and Spain at a very much later period, and in Saint Simon's time we find that in the Spanish court they were still regarded as a peculiarly honorable substitute for a chair. In France, the right to kneel upon a cushion in church behind the king was jealously guarded and strictly regulated, as we learn again from Saint-Simon. This type of cushion was called a carreau, or square. When seats were rude and hard, cushions may have been a necessity.

They are now one of the minor luxuries of life, so there you have it a quick lesson in the history of the cushion.
